After a long four year wait, I finally got to see Billy Joel live again. I got to MCI center around 6:00 PM with my best friend and we waited around until the security people would let us in. From the lobby of the arena, we could hear Billy and the band doing their soundcheck. The only song I could recognize from the sound check was "Sergeant Pepper's Loney Hearts Club Band."
At 7:00PM, the guards finally let us in the arena (we were the first ones in at our entrance). We rushed over to our seats and waited for the show to start. It was slated to started at 8:00, but Billy didn't come out till 8:30. Later on, he joked, "You know, we were ready at 8:00, but we were waiting for you guys to get here."
He opened up his set with "Angry Young Man" and some of the other usual stuff. Then, he decided to play something older that he hadn't played in a while, "The Stranger." After that, another surprise, "You're My Home." A few songs down the road, he played us two more rare ones, "Don't Ask Me Why" and "The Longest Time."
The concert continued on, and he played some of his more common hits, like "We Didn't Start the Fire," and the two that were born together, "Lullabye" and "River of Dreams." In between, he snuck in another rarity, "Sometimes a Fantasy."
Finally, he finished his eighteen song set and went back under the stage. Meanwhile my entire section was chanting, "Bil-lee! Bil-lee! Bil-lee!"
After a few minutes, he came back on and played the biggest shocker of the night, "Captain Jack." Finally, the show ended with the customary "Piano Man" (with the crowd singing the last verse, of course) and the show ended. Moments later, the bright lights at the MCI Center came on and we all went home.
